Hi All -
My first teaching job was in a junior high school in Uniondale. About a hundred yards down the road was a tiny movie theater that managed to keep the projector going by showing midnight cult movies. It was apparent that the Uniondale Mini could not keep going by showing movies like “The Creature from the Black Lagoon” and “The Bride of Frankenstein” endlessly - but then in the mid 1970’s the Mini hit cult movie pay dirt. The Mini picked the rights to a weirdly bizarre movie that was ignored and critically dismissed; “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.” Rocky Horror became a cult bonanza and for years the Mini was the only movie theater playing it.
The appeal of the movie eludes me, but it was an audience participation thing. Movie goers would attend the show in costumes, bring along props; popcorn, water pistols, and Scotts toilet paper. The audience became the show, and a huge number of my students saw it more than a dozen times. One kid bragged that she had seen 56 times!
Here is a dance sequence “Let’s Do the Time Warp Again” which is shall we say “interesting” (and cheerfully awful.)
THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW directed by Jim Sharman (1975 100 min.)
